Alpha-1 globulin %
What it measures, and what changes the number.
Alpha-1 globulin % is the proportion of total serum protein found in the alpha-1 band of serum protein electrophoresis. That band consists largely of alpha-1 antitrypsin, a protein made by the liver, along with smaller amounts of other proteins.
It is reported alongside the other fractions as percentages (albumin, alpha-2, beta and gamma globulins) and with total protein, which is used to turn each percentage into an absolute value.
The percentage depends on the electrophoresis method and on how band limits are drawn, so labs using gel and capillary systems may report somewhat different figures for the same sample. Using plasma rather than serum can distort the pattern. Labs may print it as Alfa 1 globulina %.
