Alpha-1 globulin
What it measures, and what changes the number.
Alpha-1 globulin is one of the protein bands seen on serum protein electrophoresis, the test that separates blood proteins by charge and size. This band is made up mostly of alpha-1 antitrypsin, with smaller contributions from other proteins made by the liver. The absolute amount is calculated from the band's share and the total protein result.
It is read together with the other electrophoresis fractions, albumin and total protein, since the pattern across all bands is what the test is designed to show.
The result depends on the electrophoresis technique (gel or capillary) and on where the lab sets the band boundaries, so results between labs can differ. Labs may print it as Alfa 1 globulina.
