Alpha-2 globulin %
What it measures, and what changes the number.
Alpha-2 globulin % is the proportion of total serum protein that falls in the alpha-2 band of serum protein electrophoresis. The main proteins in this band are alpha-2 macroglobulin, haptoglobin and ceruloplasmin.
It is reported with the other electrophoresis percentages (albumin, alpha-1, beta and gamma globulins), and with total protein so the percentage can be converted into an absolute amount.
Hemolysis during collection can affect the band because haptoglobin binds released hemoglobin. Gel and capillary electrophoresis systems, and the way each lab defines band edges, can give somewhat different percentages for the same sample. Labs may print it as Alfa 2 globulina %.
