LDL/HDL ratio
What it measures, and what changes the number.
The LDL/HDL ratio is a calculated value that divides LDL cholesterol by HDL cholesterol. It summarizes the balance between the two main cholesterol carrying fractions in a single figure rather than measuring anything new.
It is derived from the standard lipid panel and is read alongside LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides, and often next to the total cholesterol to HDL ratio, which is a similar summary index.
Its accuracy follows its inputs. If LDL was calculated with the Friedewald equation, the ratio also depends on triglycerides and therefore on whether the sample was taken fasting. Using a direct LDL assay instead of a calculation can shift the result. Labs may print it as LDL/HDL RATIO.
